Fitness & Experience

For maximum enjoyment of these courses we recommend that you have some experience of walking in the British hills. As winter mountain walking can be a fairly strenuous activity, a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most out of the days and help you absorb new skills more easily.

Winter Mountaineering

Want to step up from winter walking?

This course is for those who aspire to tackle winter ridges and steep terrain up to winter climbing grade I / II.

You’ll learn to cover ground containing a mixture of snow, ice and rock. Starting with a refresher and going over the critical skills (ice axe, cramponing, avalanche avoidance and winter navigation) quickly leads on to more advanced techniques. These look at rope work including a myriad of winter anchors and belays, ways of protecting climbers on ridges and those who are moving together.

You’ll get plenty of chance to practise for real as we take in some of our classic routes. This course is the winter equivalent to a summer scrambling course and can be serious fun.
